Match Report

Cadley Vs Penwortham St Teresa’s

7th February 2010.

Following the Hair Bear Bunch’s victory in the first round of the cup Cadley today faced League rivals PST in the second round.  This was going to be a tough game with the teams having shared a 0-0 draw earlier in the season.

Cadley started well pushing PST back and an early effort from Williams grazed the bar.  Rowland was next to threaten the goal when a curling shot from the left went the wrong side of the far post.  PST hit back and Smith had to be alert pulling off two saves from a dangerous corner and then the PST strike saw a good effort just clear the bar.  Cadley then had their best spell of the game and after Grant, Rowland and Pitt all came close Williams scored when his long range shot went in off the post (1-0).  Despite this pressure PST scored against the run of play when a long throw wasn’t cleared properly and the centre forward toe poked under Smith. (1-1). Cadley continued to dominate the play and got the goals they deserved.  Firstly Ormsby’s left foot shot, following good work from Grant and Rowland,  beat the keeper at his far post (2-1) and then Grant was on hand at the far post to calming side foot past a stranded keeper (3-1).

HT (3-1)

The second half was an end to end encounter with both teams adding to their goal tally.  PST was first to strike. After Culshaw had put in a last gasp tackle to prevent a goal the PST midfield rose above the Cadley defence from the corner to head home (3-2).  Before the celebrations had died down Cadley had restored their two goal advantage when Smith’s goal kick beat the PST defence and Rowland was first to the ball and then wrong footed the keeper before putting the ball in the bottom corner (4-2).  PST continued to push forward putting the Cadley defence under pressure.  Nugent and Nelson were strong at the back and with Pitt patrolling centre midfield PST were being contained.  Cadley were now playing on the break and the best move of the game extended the lead further.  Culshaw beat a couple of players on the left before cutting inside and laying the ball off to Ormsby whose first time ball split the defence and found Houghton in behind to finish brilliantly (5-2).  In truth PST finished the stronger of the two teams and whilst Cadley were dangerous on the break PST were creating the better chances.  Good saves by Smith and last ditch challenges from Nugent and Grant kept PST at bay but with only a minute to play another good block by Culshaw fell nicely for the centre forward who bundled the ball over the line.  (5-3)

FT (5-3)

After the match Paul and Scott said “We are pleased with the performance today against a tough opponent.  We had good energy and good shape and that was important.  We were strong in defence and our midfield and forwards created the better chances which made the difference in the end.  We need to maintain this level of performance if we going to progress further in the cup”
